Google, Apple, IBM Need Skills More Than Degree For Hiring

Other companies such as Costco, Starbucks, and Chipotle have removed a college degree from their list of requirements for a job

Jobs are being more based on the skills of the job seekers, more than the professional education the students have acquired. Companies will now look more at the skills of the candidates rather than a graduation/post-graduation degree.

And recently, job review site Glassdoor has compiled and released a list of 15 different companies that don’t require job applicants to have college degrees. The list includes high-paying tech outlets like Apple, Google, and IBM, in addition to service-oriented companies like Costco, Starbucks, and Chipotle.

“Academic qualifications will still be taken into account and indeed remain an important consideration when assessing candidates as a whole, but will no longer act as a barrier to getting a foot in the door,” Maggie Stilwell, Ernst and Young’s managing partner for talent, told the Huffington Post when that company dropped the requirement.

IBM’s Vice President of Talent Joanna Daley reported that 15 percent of the company’s employees lack a traditional four-year degree, adding that told that the company is open to hiring computer engineers who have hands-on experience from personal projects or coding vocational classes.

Google acknowledged several years ago that college transcripts and test scores are worthless predictors of later job performance. At IBM, where roughly 15 percent of new hires in the US don’t have college degrees, CEO Ginni Rometty has said that vocational courses and on-the-job experience offer more relevant training for many tech sector positions than a four-year college degree.

However, companies like Ernst & Young, Costco Wholesale, Whole Foods, Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Publix Grocery, Starbucks Nordstrom, Home Depot and Bank of America offer only entry-level jobs to candidates without a degree; whereas Google, Apple, IBM, and Penguin Random House offer mid to high-level positions that don’t require a college degree.
